Biodegradable and Antimicrobial Plastics from Water Hyacinth"

Transforming an invasive weed into a high-value, eco-friendly material. Leading the charge with our "Three-Zero Model" for a sustainable future.

Plastic Doesn’t Decompose—But Our Planet Might

Globally, over 400 million tons of plastic are produced each year, with less than 10% recycled. Most plastic ends up in oceans or landfills, persisting for centuries. Compounding the crisis, plastic surfaces have been shown to harbor and transmit antimicrobial-resistant bacteria—posing significant food safety and public health risks.

In Bangladesh, the problem is twofold:

  • Water hyacinth clogs waterways, threatens biodiversity, and limits access to fishing/agriculture.

  • Plastic waste generation exceeds 3,000 tons/day, with only 36% recycled and much of it polluting rivers and urban drainage.

Current Plastic Pollution Scenario

This project addresses both crises through a triple-impact innovation:

Product Offering:

  • 100% biodegradable plastics from water hyacinth

  • Antimicrobial plastics (infused with IP secret compounds)

  • Fertilizer functionality — plastic decomposes into soil-enhancing compost

Why Water Hyacinth?

  • Abundant in Bangladesh’s water bodies

  • High in cellulose and lignin (ideal for bioplastics)

  • Regrows rapidly and is non-edible (no food chain competition)

  • Removing it helps rehabilitate aquatic ecosystems

This solution offers zero-waste, low-cost, and high-impact product development.

Production Stages:

  1. Harvesting & Cleaning – Mechanical collection, washing, and preprocessing.

  2. Pulping & Drying – Extraction of cellulose/lignin using enzyme or acid.

  3. Polymer Blending – Mixed with glycerol, starch, and natural antimicrobials.

  4. Extrusion & Molding – Shaped into films, trays, or injection-molded items.

  5. Cutting & Packaging – Final processing with biodegradable ink and labels.

Status:

  • Lab-proven

  • Pilot facility can be operational in 3–6 months
